International Student Athlete Health Insurance: Understanding the VISIT® UnitedHealthcare Global Care Sports Plus Plan

For international students participating in INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS, selecting the right

health insurance plan is just as important as choosing the right university. Student-athletes face unique healthcare needs, from routine medical care to sports-related injuries, making it essential to understand how a health insurance plan works before arriving in the United States.

One plan frequently considered by international student-athletes is the UnitedHealthcare Global Care Intercollegiate Sports Plus Plan. Below, we answer some of the most common questions about coverage, waiver eligibility, provider networks, and sports injury benefits.

Coverage Designed for International Student-Athletes

The VISIT® UnitedHealthcare Global Care Sports Plus Plan is specifically designed for international students participating in organized intercollegiate athletics in the United States. The plan provides comprehensive medical coverage while also including benefits for athletic injuries sustained during approved sports activities.

Covered Sports include: All student athletes who are members of the following intercollegiate athletic teams: Football, Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Cheerleading, Rugby, Golf, Tennis, Rifle, Hockey, Swimming, Track and Field, Equestrian, Wrestling, Boxing, Lacrosse, Gymnastics, and Skating, Cross Country, Rowing, Fencing, Squash, Skiing, Crew, Rodeo, Bowling.

Covered athletic activities include:

  • Official games and competitions

  • Team practices and training sessions

  • Strength and conditioning activities

  • Organized competitive sports participation

  • Team-sanctioned events

Sports-related medical benefits include:

  • Emergency medical treatment

  • Orthopedic care and surgery

  • MRI and CT scans

  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation

One important consideration is that athletic injury benefits are limited to $10,000 per injury. Student-athletes should review this benefit carefully and understand how it may coordinate with any secondary athletic insurance provided by their university.

Monthly Premiums and Enrollment Flexibility

For International Students age 22 and under, the 2026-2027 Academic Year Sports Plus premiums are:

  • $213.60 per month with a $500 deductible

  • $237.60 per month with a $100 deductible

For International Students age 23-26, the 2026-2027 Academic Year Sports Plus premiums are:

  • $338.10 per month with a $500 deductible

  • $376.20 per month with a $100 deductible

The plan requires a minimum enrollment period of three months.

Many international students only need coverage while attending school in the United States. Fortunately, students may enroll only for the months they are physically present in the country. For example, a student attending classes from August through May may purchase coverage for the academic year and choose not to maintain coverage during the summer if returning home.

Students should always confirm required coverage dates with their university before enrolling.

Access to a Nationwide Provider Network

The Sports Plus Plan utilizes the UnitedHealthcare Options PPO Network, one of the largest provider networks in the United States.

This gives students access to:

  • Primary care physicians

  • Urgent care centers

  • Hospitals

  • Sports medicine specialists

  • Orthopedic surgeons

  • Physical therapists

Students can search for in-network providers before enrollment to verify access near their university. Using in-network providers generally results in lower out-of-pocket costs and a smoother claims experience.

Coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions

A significant advantage of the Sports Plus Plan is that it provides immediate coverage for pre-existing conditions. Unlike many international student plans that impose waiting periods, the Sports Plus Plan does not require students to wait before receiving benefits related to pre-existing medical conditions. However, students should review the policy certificate carefully, as certain exclusions apply. Congenital conditions, for example, are not covered under the policy.

Can the Sports Plus Plan Be Used for a University Insurance Waiver?

Many students have successfully used the Sports Plus Plan to obtain waivers from university-sponsored health insurance programs.

After enrollment, students can access waiver support materials through their online portal, including:

  • Waiver support letters

  • Schedule of Benefits

  • Certificate of Coverage

  • Plan documentation

If a university denies the waiver request, students may be eligible for a refund by submitting the denial letter through the student portal within 14 days of receipt of the denial letter.  As long as the plan has not been used and the denial letter is received within 14 days, you will receive a full refund.

Because every university establishes its own waiver standards, approval at one institution does not guarantee approval at another. Students should always verify waiver requirements directly with their school.

How Claims Work

Students often worry about whether they must pay medical expenses upfront.

In most cases, when an in-network provider is used, the provider bills the insurance company directly. The student is generally responsible only for any applicable deductible, coinsurance, or copayment.

When using out-of-network providers, billing practices vary. Some providers may bill the insurance company directly, while others may require payment at the time of service and reimbursement afterward. For this reason, students should use in-network providers whenever possible.

Coordination with University Athletic Insurance

Many colleges and universities provide secondary athletic insurance for student-athletes.

When a student has both the Sports Plus Plan and university-provided athletic coverage, the insurance companies may coordinate benefits to determine how claims are paid.

Students should always disclose all active insurance policies when receiving medical treatment and provide details of any secondary athletic insurance program offered by their school.
